WHAT THE TEAM IS READING THIS SUMMER: Arti, Director “Educated” is the true story of Tara Westover’s journey from her orthodox, unschooled childhood to a Ph.D. in history from Cambridge University. Tara grew up in a fundamentalist Mormon household with a Father who believed whatever happened was God’s plan, that the world was coming to an end and the government was the source of all evil. She was made to work in a junkyard and suffered violent verbal and physical abuse from ...her brother, sometimes in view of her parents. Home schooling was limited to infrequent session with her mother, who had a bookshelf stocked with books on herbalism, along with a few textbooks on math, history and science. At age 17, she bravely decided to go to college, teaching herself subjects required to pass the ACT and set foot in a classroom for the first time in her life. So, is it believable? Do people really live like this? Can parents really put their beliefs over their child’s wellbeing? Perhaps she exaggerated a little, but don’t we all? I think this is truly a remarkable story of courage, strength and determination that really blew my mind. 展开
