During the first weekend of August, the tiny town of Downieville, CA explodes with spectators and racers attending Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship’s infamous Downieville Classic, one of the sport’s most unique, colorful, and difficult events. The rest of the year, however, the population hovers at around 325, leaving plenty of space for Even Ames to wheelie down Main Street after one of the area’s legendary descents. Photo: Ken Etzel
